Marine Corps Appreciation Day

Raymond Klimek Veterans Park
(formerly Fisherman's
Park) Special tribute to be bestowed on a Buffalo
Native, Hero Sgt. Peter Bingheimer who received seven purple hearts from
wounds received in the Korean Conflict on October 6, 1952. His
outpost was overrun and he was one of two survivors from a company of
thirty marines attacked by more than 300 Chinese soldiers from what is
known as the Battle of Frisco. Sgt. Bingheimer suffered six
serious wounds as well as minor bullet and shrapnel wounds. A hand
grenade blew off two of his fingers and he had to immerse his hand in
mud to stop the bleeding. He survived by playing dead and hiding
under the bodies of two dead Chinese soldiers. He was dragged to
safety by the other survivor. He was taken to a hospital ship and
spent five months recovering.
