Special tribute to be bestowed on a Buffalo Hero. The NAVY CROSS is presented to Daniel Francis Casey , Second Lieutenant , U S Marine Corps ( Reserve ) for extraordinary heroism as a platoon leader, attached to Company A , First battalion , Ninth Marines , third Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima , Volcano Islands , 6 march 1945.
He was born July 20th, 1922 in Gleasonton, Pennsylvania. During the 30's he lived in several places including a house in Buffalo, New York. He attended St. Mary Magdalene School in Buffalo, NY.  He joined the USMC on January 13th, 1940. Training locations include Parris Island, South Carolina; Portsmouth, Virginia; and Quantico, Virginia. H became an Officer on January 12th, 1944.
HIS SERVICE RECORD:  Served aboard USS Wichita, USS Wasp, USS Quincy, USS Tuscaloosa, USS Idaho, USS Massachusetts, and USS Washington. Participated the Naval Engagement at Casablanca, Morocco. Served at Iceland and on convoy duties in the North Atlantic. As an enlisted marine he served as Admiral Giffen's orderly in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He was with the USS Wichita in engagements in the South Pacific and Aleutian Islands. He served with the 34th Replacement Draft and joined the 9th regiment of the 3rd marine Division on March 2nd.  He was killed in action on March 6th , 1945 , serving with A-1-9 on Iwo Jima.
MILITARY AWARDS: the NAVY CROSS , Purple Heart , American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal , and World War II Victory medal.
